Question:
Hey Jeff- I've watched many of your YouTube videos on golf tips. You definitely have your physics right and I can't wait to try some of these out. Something I have really been working on on the range is fixing my slice. I only slice on my drives and am really trying to cut my score down. I saw your video with the 3 golf balls and changing the direction of the downswing. Will this start a habit of hooking the ball? Any other tips about the tee shots? Thanks for all your videos and looking forward to your response! - Andy
Jeff Answers:
The thing that I try to convey to people is that there really is no such thing as a "bad" swing. In reality your swing is simply perfect for whatever result you are getting. If you are slicing, that means your motion has one or more "slicing" fundamentals in it. To effectively change your ball flight you must exchange your slicing fundamentals for, "yes," "hooking fundamentals." The two ball drill that you watched on youtube will give you the feeling of a swing shape and club face that will easily bend your ball the opposite way. It is up to you the player to determine when that "feeling" is just right to give you the amount of bend that you desire.
Realize as well that there is a difference between "golfers and players." A golfer starts at hole #1 and ends at hole #18. Conversely, a "player" has the ability to play each shot just the way the situation dictates. This means to me that they can easily control, direction, curvature and trajectory at will. You learning to bend the ball both ways with drills like this one will get you one step closer to being able to truly control your ball on command!
Finally on your Driver Tip, it is imperative that your ball be played forward off of the left heel and your ball be teed relatively high. A slicer usually has too "steep" of an angle of attack, so putting the ball high up will force you to deliver a blow with a more sweeping attitude. In truth, a perfect tee shot will pick the ball clean with the tee still standing tall! Hope this helps!
